Practice question
Question
A weak acid HZ has Ka = 2.0 × 10⁻⁴ . What is the pH of a 0.1 M solution of HZ ?
Explanation
For HZ <=> H+ + Z- , Ka = (x²/0.1 - x) ≈ (x²/0.1) = 2.0 × 10⁻⁴ . Solving, x² = 2.0 × 10⁻⁵ , x = 4.47 × 10⁻³ , pH = -log(4.47 × 10⁻³) ≈ 2.35 .
