Phumdis (floating grasslands) are found in
Phumdis are unique floating heterogeneous mats composed of vegetation, organic debris, and soil whose thickness varies, intertwined by roots of reeds and grasses, floating on Loktak Lake Manipur, largest freshwater lake in Northeast India and Ramsar site. Seasonal rise fall maintains buoyancy. Southern phumdis form Keibul Lamjao National Park, world's only floating park, habitat of Sangai deer. Phumdis provide insulation, water purification, fishing platforms called athapum, but threatened by Ithai barrage altering water regime causing thinning and sinking. Clarity on this principle prevents confusion between in-situ and ex-situ methods often interchanged in examination options.
