Zoosporic fungi reproduce asexually via flagellated zoospores capable of swimming in water films toward chemotactic signals. Motility enables dispersal in aquatic or moist terrestrial habitats requiring liquid water. Zoospores lack cell wall during motile phase, exhibit posteriorly directed flagellum or tinsel flagella depending on lineage. Non-motile spores such as conidia and ascospores rely on air currents for dispersal. Production of zoospores unites Chytridiomycota, Blastocladiomycota and Neocallimastigomycota distinguishing them from higher terrestrial fungi where flagellated stage evolutionarily lost. Water availability governs zoospore release.
