Which interaction type is shown by a fungus and plant root association?

Mycorrhiza is a resource-based mutualism between a fungus and a plant root. Fungal hyphae extend far beyond the root depletion zone and efficiently acquire phosphorus, nitrogen, micronutrients, and water from a larger soil volume. These resources are transferred to the plant, while the fungus receives photosynthetically fixed carbon, mainly sugars and lipids. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi enter root cortical cells and form branched arbuscules for exchange; ectomycorrhizal fungi form a mantle and Hartig net around root cells. The association may also improve stress tolerance or pathogen resistance, but reciprocal nutrient exchange is its core mechanism. Commensalism would imply no effect on the plant, which contradicts the usual nutritional benefit. Defensive mutualism emphasizes enemy protection rather than resource trading, and inquilinism concerns use of another organism as living space. Costs and benefits vary with soil fertility and carbon availability, so some associations can become less beneficial, but the canonical plant–fungus relationship is based on complementary resource acquisition.
