Chlamydospores can be formed at which positions in hyphae?

Chlamydospores are survival propagules produced via hyphal compartment swelling with thick wall deposition rich in melanin. Positional flexibility adaptive: terminal at hyphal tip when tip growth arrests and cytoplasm concentrates, intercalary within hyphal segment between two septa surrounded by vegetative cells, and lateral as side bud on short stalk emerging laterally. This plasticity observed in Candida, Fusarium, Rhizoctonia allows response to localized stress and nutrient deprivation. Apical only or only intercalary descriptions overly restrictive. Inside conidiophores incorrect since conidiophores bear conidia not chlamydospores. Therefore versatile formation maximizes survival.

Chlamydospores primarily function in

Chlamydospores are thick-walled, melanized, nutrient-rich intercalary or terminal hyphal swellings acting as survival structures during unfavorable conditions such as nutrient depletion, desiccation, temperature extremes or host immune attack. Wall contains hydrophobic proteins, melanin and glycogen reserves sustaining dormancy for extended periods. Upon return of favorable moisture and temperature they germinate producing mycelium or sporangium. Unlike conidia adapted for rapid aerial dispersal, or sexual spores for recombination, chlamydospores prioritize longevity and resistance. Common in Candida albicans, Fusarium, Mucor ensuring persistence in soil.
