Practice question
Question
For 2NO(g) + O₂(g) <=> 2NO₂(g) , Kc = 100 at 300 K. If 0.2 mol NO and 0.1 mol O₂ are in a 1 L vessel, what is [NO₂] at equilibrium?
Explanation
Initial: [NO] = 0.2 M , [O₂] = 0.1 M , [NO₂] = 0 . Let 2x = [NO₂] , [NO] = 0.2 - 2x , [O₂] = 0.1 - x . Kc = ([NO₂]²/[NO]²[O₂]) = ((2x)²/(0.2 - 2x)²(0.1 - x)) = 100 , (4x²/(0.2 - 2x)²(0.1 - x)) = 100 . Solving, x ≈ 0.09 , [NO₂] = 2 × 0.09 = 0.18 M .
