The fundamental niche contains the combinations of abiotic conditions and resources under which a species can maintain a nonnegative population growth rate when restrictive biotic interactions such as competition are absent. It represents potential occupancy, not necessarily the locations used in nature. Competitors often reduce this potential range to a smaller realized niche, while predators, pathogens, mutualists, and dispersal barriers can also alter actual distribution. Describing the fundamental niche as “exclusively abiotic conditions” is too narrow because resources are part of niche space and may be biotic, such as prey or hosts. The abstraction is multidimensional: temperature, moisture, food size, nesting sites, and other axes jointly determine performance. Experimental removal of competitors can reveal hidden parts of the fundamental niche when a species expands into areas it previously did not occupy. The concept does not imply that every suitable site will be reached, because dispersal may be limited. Its value lies in separating physiological and resource-based potential from the biotically filtered pattern observed in a community.
