Why is ortho-nitrophenol more acidic than ortho-methoxyphenol?
The -NO₂ group is electron-withdrawing, stabilizing the phenoxide ion via resonance and inductive effects, increasing acidity. The -OCH₃ group is electron-donating, reducing acidity.
