ELISA standardly uses polystyrene microtiter plates with 96 wells to allow high throughput, small volume reactions, efficient washing and plate reader quantification. Variants include 384 well for screening, but format remains microplate. Twelve well and twenty four well plates are used for tissue culture, not optimized for ELISA coating and optical reading. Petri dish is large, non compartmentalized, not compatible with multichannel pipettes, washing systems or spectrophotometric measurement, lacks individual wells for replicates and standards, hence not suitable for quantitative ELISA.
