Complete separation is unnecessary—partial differentiation may be enough if intraspecific competition becomes stronger than interspecific competition. Ecologists demonstrate partitioning by comparing resource-use distributions, traits, or performance, ideally showing that overlap and competitive effects change when species occur together versus separately.
