Cytosolic NOD-like receptors detect microbial products or danger signals and can assemble multiprotein inflammasomes that activate caspase-1. Caspase-1 processes the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-18 and also cleaves gasdermin D to induce pyroptosis.
